Holiday Resort Landscape Project at Malegoda, Sri Lanka
To transform an existing large residential property into a lucrative and serene holiday retreat for rental guests, maximizing comfort, leisure activities, and aesthetic appeal while harmonizing the landscape with the existing architecture.
Primary Entrance (Residents' Access)
This entrance was strategically redesigned to manage the existing access road, serving exclusively as the dedicated entry point for residents and the main house, ensuring their privacy. The approach involved redeveloping the existing access road using a modern, segmented design: concrete strips are integrated with grass strips and flanked by low stone retaining walls, ensuring safe, comfortable vehicular access while enhancing the tropical aesthetic. This zone is secured by a new, architecturally sophisticated sliding gate at the main entrance, blending security with high aesthetic appeal.
Secondary Entrance (Visitors' Access & Parking)
The secondary entry point is newly proposed and strategically designed to manage the crucial first impression and logistics for resort guests. This 20 ft wide access way is clearly demarcated by a stylish gate system, including a sliding gate and wicket gate, and is flanked by clean, white boundary walls. The design integrates parking spaces directly into the welcoming landscape. A distinctive water feature with aquatic plants and fish serves as a welcoming focal point for arriving visitors. Strategic level changes were incorporated at this entrance to enhance the spatial experience and create a psychological transition into the property's tranquil environment.
Front Yard (North Side)
The Front Yard serves as the primary main house entrance and a protected green space designed for guest enjoyment. The design ensures a clear and detailed entrance to the house is immediately visible, enhanced by a spacious lawn area bordered by carefully maintained shrubs. Movement zones are clearly demarcated by new pavements featuring warm terracotta tiling, which extends beneath the elevated patio. This area emphasizes privacy and aesthetics: a newly proposed 6 ft high boundary wall is screened by lush planting to minimize external disturbances. An efficient drainage system maintains the pristine lawn and functional access points.
Relaxing Area (East Side)
The Relaxing Area is the property's dedicated tranquil, low-impact retreat. This zone is defined by its abundance of existing mature trees, which were conserved and celebrated to provide dense natural shade and a tranquil, forest-like atmosphere. The centerpiece is a raised wooden deck designed for quiet activities such as reading, tea gatherings, and casual outdoor events. The deck features nature-inspired seating and is framed by preserved palm trees and lush understory planting. Circulation paths are marked by organic stepping stones that encourage a slow, contemplative pace.
Pool & Play Area (West Side)
The Pool and Play Area is the dedicated, high-value leisure hub for guest recreation. This section of the land was developed around the central swimming pool, which is surrounded by a multi-use lawn area featuring distinctive segmented paving. The deck surrounding the pool is paved with granite stone, providing a durable, non-slip surface. The perimeter is secured by a retaining wall that elegantly separates the pool from the main house area. Naturalistic boundary planting in front of a modern screened wall and rows of flowering Plumeria trees provide both shade and a vibrant tropical backdrop.
